BANGLADESH is situated to the Northeast of the Indian sub-continent. The landscape is mainly flat alluvial plains, rising in the Northeast, East, and Southeast (along the Indian and Burmese borders ) to form forested hills.
Much of Bangladesh is underwater, and flooding often occurs.
The historic capital, Dhaka, lies on the Buriganga River, which connects the city with all major inland ports in the country. The old part of the city has a 17th century Fort, the Ahsan Manzil Palace Museum, and several Mosques. The European quarter houses the Presidential Palace, the Dhakeswari Temple, and the National Museum.
The Northwest of the country has many archaeological sites, including Paharpur, Sherpur, and Mahastanagar.
The Southwest is mainly marshland and jungle, but houses the Sundarbans National Park.
The Southeast houses the thriving port of Chittagong, on the Bay of Bengal, and further South, the busy tourist centre and beach resort of Cox’s Bazar.
The south boasts a bird sanctuary at Madubashah, and the beautiful tourist attraction at Kuakata, with its wide, sandy beach.
The climate is tropical, with a monsoon season from April to October. |
