BHUTAN is situated in the Eastern Himalayas, bordered by China to the North and India to the South, East and the West. The landscape varies from the tropical lowlands in the South, to the higher Himalayan region in the North.
The capital, Thimphu, is situated at a height of over 2400m (8000ft), while the old capital, Punakha, is situated at a lower altitude, with the surrounding region containing many sacred temples.
The Paro Valley houses the Taktsang Monastery (which ‘clings’ to the face of a 900m (2952ft) precipice), and the National Museum of Bhutan.
Many areas are closed to tourists and potential visitors should check first with the Bhutan Tourist Corporation.
