BRITISH INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORY consists of the Chagos Archipelago, and the coral atoll of Diego Garcia. The islands are used jointly by the US and the UK governments for military purposes.

There are no permanent inhabitants ( in 1996 there were about 1000 US and British military personnel stationed there)
