CAMEROON is situated in Central West Africa, with a coastline (in the West) on the Gulf of Guinea (in the Atlantic Ocean).
Behind the coastal strip are dense forests and Savannah uplands, rising in the North to the vast Maroua Plain, which in turn changes to semi-desert in the far North. In the Northwest of the country, to the West of the Maroua Plain, are the Mandara Mountains, boasting volcanic peaks, and beautiful scenic waterfalls.
The capital, Yaounde, lies in the South, while Douala, the economic capital, lies in the Southwest, 24km (15miles), from the sea, on the bank of the Wouri River, and dominated by Mount Cameroon. The city houses a cathedral, a museum, the harbour and markets.
The ports and beach resorts of Limbe and Kribi can be found to the West (Limbe), and to the South (Kribi), of the city.
Cameroon houses the Kalamaloue Reserve, and the Waza and Boubandjidah National Parks.
Temperatures in the North vary, with the rainy seasom from May to October. The South is hot and dry, with the rainy season from July to October. |
