CHRISTMAS ISLAND
is located in the Indian Ocean, 2,600km (1,625 miles) north-west of Perth, Western Australia. Even though it is an
Australian Territory, its closest neighbour is Indonesia, 360km (225 miles) away.
A nature lovers paradise with around 60% of it is national park containing species of flora & fauna found nowhere
else in the world. The most populace of these, being the Red Crab, with over 100 million of these vivid red creatures
living on the forest floor.
Scuba-divers around the island are rewarded with a myriads of tropical fish in shallower waters, while a short
distance away a drop-off offers an array of larger fish, dolphins and the majestic whaleshark!
The population is a blend of Chinese, Malay & Caucasians from the Australian mainland providing the visitor with a
diverse cultural experience with numerous temples, festivals and a variety of cuisines.
Christmas Island experiences a tropical equatorial climate with wet and dry seasons. The wet season is from December
to April when the island comes under the influence of the north-west monsoons. During the rest of the year, the south-east
trade winds bring slightly lower temperatures and humidity with much less rain. |
