THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC occupies the Eastern end of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti.

It is mainly mountainous and forested, with excellent beaches and resorts, including Puerto Plata, La Romana and Santo Domingo, the capital.

The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from June to October.
