EGYPT is situated in North Africa, with the Mediterranean to the North, and the Red Sea to the East. The Suez Canal divides the main region from the smaller Sinai Peninsular.
The Great Nile River runs from North to South, and the lush and fertile Nile Delta and Valley region houses 90% of the population.
Most of Egypt consists of flat desert with a few oases, but it is the beach resorts, and the famous heritage sites that attract the visitors.
The capital, Cairo, lies in the North, on the Nile and the Nile Delta. It is a large city (pop 7 million), with many attractions, including the famous Egyptian Museum (housing the treasures of Tutankhamun), the magnificent Pyramids of Giza, and the unique Sphinx.
South of Cairo are the tourist attractions and heritage areas of Luxor (which abounds with ancient monuments, including the Temples at Karnak, and the valley of the Kings), Aswan (a beautiful resort and site at the Aswan Dam), and Abu Simbel, (housing the magnificent Temples Of Rameses 11
Egypt has many beach resorts, including Alexandria, situated on the Mediterranean Coast, with fine beaches to the West and East of the city.
The Sinai Peninsular boasts many diving resorts, and some breathtaking scenery. In the interior are the rugged Sinai Mountains (housing Mount Sinai, of Biblical fame), St. Catherine’s Monastery, and Saladin’s Qalaat al-Gundi fortress.
