Most of the country is volcanic uplands, with two ranges of volcanoes, some of which may be visited.

The capital, San Salvador, is situated 680m (2,240ft) above sea level, and is the second largest city in Central America.

The climate is hot and sub-tropical, especially in the coastal areas, with the rainy season from May to October. The uplands have a cooler temperature.
