ERITREA is situated in Northeast Africa, stretching along the Red Sea coast. It has a low-lying coastal region, and a mountainous interior.
The capital, Asmara, lies in the highlands, and abounds with Italian architecture. The road from the capital to the port of Massawa, on the coast, is spectacular, with breathtaking views. Massawa reflects the periods of Ottoman and Egyptian periods in its history, and the islands of Batsi and Twalet are connected to the port by dams.
The dahlak Archipelago, consisting of hundreds of islands in the Red Sea near Massawa, is protected as a marine National Park.
The temperature varies between the regions, with the main rainy season from July to September. |
