THE FALKLAND ISLANDS consist of two main islands, together with hundreds of small outlying islands.
They lie 560 km off the East coast of South America, and are mostly mountainous.
The highest mountain is Mount Usborne ( 705m), situated on East Falkland Island, which has low lying terrain in the South, and the capital city, Stanley, in the East. Here can be found Stanley harbour, a museum, and the cathedral.
Fishing and Sheep-farming are the main occupations of the Falklanders, and there are wonderful coastal areas excellent for observing the marine bird-life, (including penguins). Also there are many ships and wrecks abandoned here in the past which can be observed and explored (weather permitting!).
The islands enjoy a temperate climate.
