GEORGIA is situated to the North of Turkey, and is a mountainous country, with the Greater Caucasus Ranges crossing the country, enclosing high valleys with caves and waterfalls, giving the landscape a striking beauty.
It is bordered on the West by the Black Sea, which houses the coastal resorts of Gagra, Pitsunda, and Batumi. The latter has a Turkish character (being close to their border) and has mountains rising up from the edge of the sea.
The capital, Tbilisi, has a Mediterranean atmosphere, with its winding streets, vine-draped courtyards, and frescoed churches, while Mtskheta, 20km (12miles) to the Northwest, (with its Christian Svetitshoveli Cathedral and Samtavro Monastery)has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Other places of interest include Gori (the birthplace of Stalin), Uplistsikhe (a large complex of natural caves), and the spa town of Bordzhomi.
Hot summers and mild winters, especially in the Southwest, where there is also the heaviest rainfall. |
