GHANA is situated in West Africa, and has the Atlantic Ocean coastline in the South, which boasts sandy palm-fringed beaches and lagoons.
The South and West are covered by dense rainforests, rising in the North to forested hills, and then to Savannah and open woodlands. The two Volta Rivers (the Black and White), merge into the great man-made Volta Lake, in the East. of the country.
The capital, Accra, lies on the South coast, and houses the National Museum, the Makola Market, and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.
To the East of the capital, at the mouth of the Volta, is Ada, a popular coastal resort.
Further North can be found Kumasi, the historic capital of the ‘Ashanti’ civilisation, which houses the ruins of the Manhyia Palace, and the Royal Mausoleum. It also boasts a cultural centre, and a ‘Living Museum’.
Other places of interest include the Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary, the Mole National Park, and the Shai Hills Game Reserve.
A tropical climate, with the rainy seasons from March to July, and from September to October. |
