GREECE is situated in Southern Europe, on the Mediterranean, and consists of the mainland, and many islands, the majority of which lie in the Aegean Sea, between the Geek and Turkish coasts.
Athens, the capital, is situated in the South of the mainland, in the region of Attica. The city abounds with places of historical interest (including an excellent museum), and is dominated by the Acropolis, the site of the 2,400 year-old Parthenon, one of the most famous classical monuments in the world. The old quarter, ‘The Plaka’, with its picturesque narrow, winding alleys and tavernas, is spread around foot of the Acropolis.
Piraeus is the main port of Athens, and ferries leave frequently for the islands.
The country abounds with archaeological sites relating to classical Greek History. North of Athens is Delphi, the site of the famous oracle, and, further North, stands Mount Olympus, home of the immortal Gods, and the land of the Centaurs.
The Peloponnese, separated from central Greece by the Corinth Canal, houses many ancient sights, including Corinth, Sparta, Mycenae, and Olympia (the original site of the games)
The North is more mountainous than the rest of the country, with the Pindus and Hassin ranges.
The Greek Islands are famous for their beauty and their history. The largest include Crete, Corfu, and Rhodes.
The whole of Greece abounds with beautiful scenery, archaeological wonders, and magnificent beaches.
A warm, Mediterranean climate. Winters are mild in the South, colder in the North. The rainy season is from November to March. |
