GUATEMALA is a Central American country, bordering Mexico to the North and West, the Pacific Ocean to the South, El Salvador and Honduras to the Southeast, and Belize and the Caribbean Sea to the Northeast.

It is mainly mountainous, with a string of volcanoes along the Southern highlands, and also a ring of them surrounding the beautiful Lake Atilan, which is well worth a visit.
The country is also rich in forests, mainly in the Northwest - the El Peten area - and it is here where lie the great Mayan ruins of Tikal, and Flores, which is built on an island in the middle of Lake El Peten.

Guatemala city is situated in the South, and the nearby volcanoes give wonderful views of the city and the surrounding countryside.

The Northwest and the coastal areas are hot throughout the year. The rainy season runs from May to September.
